WHAT TO SEE IN CESENATICO
Porto Canale and Museo della Marineria: the historic Porto Canale Leonardesco is the biggest attraction in the Municipality of Cesenatico. Excavation work on the canal began at the start of the 14th century but the project was taken over and made official 200 years later thanks to famous figures such as Leonardo da Vinci and Cesare Borgia. As you stroll past the bars and shops keep an eye out for the historic boats opposite the Museo della Marineria, such as the Trabaccolo and the Bragozzo. At Christmas time, the atmosphere is magical thanks to the inimitable floating Nativity Scene of the Marineria.
Piazza delle Conserve: tucked away among the narrow streets of the historic centre is a little jewel, Piazza delle Conserve. Nowadays used to host small weekly fruit and veg markets, here you can admire the wells that were traditionally used to conserve foods.
Valòna: on the west bank, known as the Ponente, a short walk from the Porto Canale is Valòna, a residential area that forms part of Cesenatico’s harbour town. Its pastel-coloured houses create a wonderful multicoloured landscape. On the outskirts of the neighbourhood is the Teatro Comunale, which hosts cultural events throughout the year.
Casa di Marino Moretti: close to the theatre and the harbour area you can visit the former home of Crepuscular poet Marino Moretti, native of Cesenatico. The museum is home to his notable private collection of books, still complete with all his notes, and a secret courtyard at the centre of the residence.
Tour of the “Liberty”: villas located close to Hotel Miramare and the New Bristol Sport Hotel, the “Liberty”, villas are well worth checking out. Excluding the Fish Market in the historic centre, the most noteworthy buildings are located in via Anita Garibaldi and Viale Carducci. Today the villas are private homes with gardens.
